Frost / Catia Chien

Dig the quirky graphics of one Miz Catia Chien, a rising illustrator whose first children’s book, The Sea Serpent and Me, written by Dashka Slater, is forthcoming from Houghton Mifflin. It’s always inspiring to see a fellow SCBWI member make good. She has oodles of goodies for sale on her site, including an appropriately moody set of wintry postcards (Santa, are you reading…?) that utterly convinces me she’s working not from impossibly bright SoCal, but from the dark, precipitous country of Denmark where I am now.

You’re in Denmark? Goodness it’s hard to keep up with you.

I adore Catia Chien and am the proud owner of two of her prints. I’m very jealous that Houghton Miflin is publishing her first book. She sent me a wonderful cat story once that needed a little more development—but the characterizations were incredibly charming. I wrote her a development letter and sadly, never saw the story again. I dearly hope to work with her someday…
